Bob Wood M.D of Houghton Carpet Centre started as an apprentice carpet fitter at the age of 15 in his home town of Houghton-le-Spring, working for a company called Galaxy Carpet. After serving his apprenticeship for 5 years he decided to go self employed as a freelance carpet fitter sub contracting to shops in Sunderland, Durham and Gateshead areas. After sub contracting for 12 years the opportunity came to open a small shop off the beaten track in Houghton, selling carpets and vinyl flooring.
Three and a half years later we moved 200 metres up the street, 12 months after that we moved down the street and after 10 years in that shop the opportunity came to move into much larger premises the former Empire Picture Hall in Newbottle Street. We have now been there for seven years and if we can help it we don’t want to move again. We have a lot of space here now where we can display with ease hundreds of carpets and vinyl remnants, hundreds of rugs small and large, thousands of carpets and vinyl samples including laminate flooring.
The shop is helped run with wife Theresa, and daughter Elizabeth who are very helpful and friendly with customers. We have two teams of carpet fitters, one or which is Bobs brother Kevin who has worked with Bob for more than 25 years, so it is a very much a family run business. The carpet fitters are a very important part of the business, because if the customer is happy and gets a good job done they will return for repeat business, and they do. The majority of our work comes from domestic locations, we also do contract work for schools, offices and shops etc.
We also do work for Estate agencies and Letting Agencies. Most of our work comes from the local area, but we will travel to most areas to complete a job. We supply carpet and vinyl flooring from most manufacturers, including, Abbingdon Flooring, Carpets of Kidderminster, Mr Tomkinson, Ulster Carpets, Penthouse Carpets, Furlong Carpets, John Lanham Watts, Armstrong Flooring. We supply various types of carpet underlay and most types of door strips. We can deliver the same day from stock; also we can normally supply and fit within a few days from stock.
